Hampton, Va. - The Peninsula Town Center has taken action for children of all abilities by creating a brand new sensory playground.
The Peninsula School for Autism teamed up with the Town Center to open Marys Playground Park, which has special features for children with sensory needs. The park is also completely wheelchair accessible.
"This innovative, state-of-the-art playground will offer the right experiences for children with autism. The playground’s design will facilitate sensory experiences," Sydney Mrowiec, the Executive Director of the Peninsula School for Autism said.
Marys Park, named after four women who contributed to education on the Peninsula, opened in October 2015.
The playground was created by Kompan, a state of the art playground manufacturer.
The park's theme is taken from Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales "The Little Mermaid" and the "Ugly Duckling."
There is also a downloadable app that provides audio books of fairy tales that are translated into 16 different languages. Here's how to get the app:
