Newport News - A proposal from Newport News City staff to recommend stricter gun laws to the General Assembly has failed.

The recommendation was to have the General Assembly pass legislation that would make it necessary for all firearms to be licensed in Newport News. The recommendation was a part of the City's 2016 State Legislative Package. However, after a vote from all council members, it failed, 5 votes to 2.

Many city council members expressed their concerns for the recommendation saying there wasn't enough proof that it would make Newport News safer.

In the end, the Council agreed not to recommend the proposal, though Council members say they are willing to revisit the measure again in the future.
