Dare County, N.C. (WTKR) - Work will start soon on a new interim bridge on Pea Island along N.C. 12.
A $14.3 million contract was awarded by the North Carolina Department of Transportation to T. A. Loving Co. of Goldsboro.
The interim concrete bridge will replace the temporary metal structure built after Hurricane Irene sliced through N.C. 12 in 2011.
Work can start on the bridge as soon as November 30th.
Traffic must be able to use the bridge by April 12, 2017 otherwise a $5,000 penalty will be assessed for every day past the deadline.
