Newport News, Va. – A woman has been arrested in connection with a fire at an apartment building in Newport News.

Crews were dispatched out to the 900 block of Marcus Drive on October 28 around 9:25 p.m.

Officials say when crews arrived, they found heavy smoke pouring from the two-story building.

Firefighters were starting to put out flames on the second level when a hole burned through the floor. Crews got out of the building and started to attack the fire from the outside.

They were able to get the fire under control at 9:54 p.m.

The cause of the fire was ruled suspicious by investigators from the Fire Marshal’s Office.

After a long investigation, 20-year-old Charmaine March of Virginia Beach was charged with one count of arson of an occupied dwelling. March remains in the Newport News City Jail.

No injuries were reported.
