Portsmouth, Va. - A Portsmouth mother has plead guilty to multiple charges following an altercation at James Hurst Elementary School.

Jeneve Marshall went to Portsmouth Juvenile & Domestic Relations court on Wednesday and was found guilty for four charges of assault and battery and one charge of contributing to delinquency of a minor.

The judge sentenced the 27-year-old to serve one year in jail.

Marshall brought her child to school and walked her child upstairs to his 5th grade classroom on September 18.

Once she got into the classroom, police say she confronted another student who was involved in an altercation with her child and ordered her son to fight the classmate.

"I don't encourage my son to fight, but I said, 'If someone hits you and the teacher don't do anything about it, just hit them back and that's it,'" Marshall told NewsChannel 3 in a jailhouse interview.

As her child started fighting with the other child, Marshall grabbed the child and held them down, according to police. Marshall denies this happened. "I didn't touch a kid. I didn't put my hand on nobody's kid. I'm not trying to go to jail."

Next, police say the other child broke free and Marshall ran after him and pushed or grabbed three other kids who were in her way.

The children suffered minor injuries.

Marshall says she left the room during and the fight and says she's being blamed because of an ongoing dispute between her and the school over getting her kids enrolled. "I'm in jail today because of hearsay, also because the f***ing principal doesn't like me, the f***ing superintendent doesn't like me, the chick that sits at the desk don't like me, and the guidance counselor don't like me."

Marshall has been charged with four counts of assault and battery, contributing to the the delinquency of a minor, and disorderly conduct.

She is currently being held at the Portsmouth City Jail.
