I’m heading to DC this weekend, and while I wish y’all could come…I’ve provided you plenty of things to do while I’m away. Oh and Fall is on the horizon so carry those jackets with you in case it gets breezy. Let’s get started!!

There are thousands of things going on this weekend, but here are a few that made the list…

RUFIT: Virginia Beach Fitness Festival
America’s obsession with CrossFit is seen by some as (get this) unhealthy. Often times it’s because of the major technique issues that lead to injury. Well, this weekend I’ve found you a solution. The Mid Atlantic and East Coast RUFIT Fitness Festival is coming to the Oceanfront and is sure to provide countless opportunities for creating a better, healthier you! Roughing out at the 24th St. Park provides the perfect landscape for everybody to celebrate strength, health and life! Join over 300 competitors this weekend and help them raise money for 31 Heroes & the Navy SEAL Foundation.

Hampton Master Gardeners Fall Plant Sale
Satisfy your “green thumb” at the Fall Plant Sale at the beautiful Bluebird Gap Farm Saturday from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. They’ll have over 1500 plants for your liking, including annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, house plants, native plants, herbs, bulbs, and more. The Master Gardeners (MG) program, originally created to meet the need for answering horticultural questions, has in recent years begun to explore and implement programs addressing water quality, recycling, and effects of plants on humans and the community. For more information, contact Megan Tierney at 757-727-1401.

9th Annual SavageMan Triathlon
More than 800 participants will take part in an epic weekend of swimming, biking, and running. Athletes have the opportunity to win prize money by being in the Top 4, setting a course record, or by having the fastest swim, bike, or run split of the day. On Saturday, The SavageMan 30.0 kicks off at 9:30 a.m. with athletes competing in a 30.0-mile course (0.9-mile swim, 23.8-mile bike, 6.2-mile run). Locals can expect minor delays from cyclists on State Park Road, Rock Lodge, Bretheren Church, Spear, Bumblebee, Negro Mtn and Mosser from 10:00 a.m. until 12 noon. On Sunday, The SavageMan 70.0 begins at 8:30 a.m., with a 1.2-mile swim, 55.7-mile bike, and 13.1-mile run. Locals can expect minor delays from cyclists on State Park Rd, Toothpick, Glendale, North Glade, Spring Lick, MD-135, Westernport Rd, McAndrews Hill, New Germany, Otto, Jennings, Miller, Maynardier Ridge, Brenneman, Orendorf, Foxtown, Beachy, and Rock Lodge from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There are currently 10 professional triathletes registered to compete for the $3600 prize in the main events Sunday during the SavageMan 70.0. All of that exercising over the past few weekends we’ve been doing hopefully has geared you up to win nearly $4000. For more information, visit www.vtsmts.com.

NAS Oceana Air Show
Aren’t airshows the best? They don’t even need explanation. All you need to know is that it starts this weekend at 10:00 a.m. with the Blue Devil’s taking flight at 3:00 p.m. And on Saturday night, the annual Beach Blasts begins at 6:30 p.m. at the 31st Street Park featuring U.S. Fleet Forces Band Four Star Edition, an F/A-18 Super Hornet flyover, night parachute jump, and an introduction of the men and women of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. Need I say more? Didn’t think so. For more information, visit www.oceanaairshow.com.

Touch-a-Truck
Need some entertainment for the kiddos? The Touch-a-Truck rolls into Chesapeake Square Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. This unique automotive event will provide a hands-on learning experience for children to explore safety vehicles, rigs, wreckers and cool cars in a family friendly environment all sponsored by Chick-Fil-A. Suffolk Community Yard Sale
Yard Sales are such a novelty thing to do on a Saturday morning, and who doesn’t love novelty? I remember getting up early with my mom and she forcing me to go “yard sale hopping” all across town. Ahh, nostalgia. Nevertheless, join the East Suffolk Recreation Center located at 138 South Sixth Street for a day full of bargain shopping. This event will be your lucky day for finding those special items and deals you’ve been looking for all in one convenient location. Vendors will be selling clothing, household items, CDs, books, jewelry, furniture, gardening tools, antiques and more.  The Community Yard Sale is FREE and open to the public. Tables and tents are available for purchase for interested sellers. Tables are $10 each and tents are $15 each. Space is limited. Interested vendors can reserve their space by submitting the vendor application along with payment. For more information, contact 757-514-4500 or asessoms@suffolkva.us.

Denbigh Day Parade
But hold up…before you get too busy and involved in the weekend events, marvel at the area’s best marching bands, floats and vehicles during the 2015 Denbigh Day Parade. Feast on a smorgasbord of the best festival foods or grab some famous Denbigh Lion’s club Brunswick stew. Oh and did I mention you could also win a PEARSON TOYOTA!!!! Parade kicks off at 10:00 a.m. at Denbigh High School down to the Courthouse Way Community Center.

Monarch Butterfly Tag and Release Day
Join the Norfolk Botanical Garden and the Butterfly Society of Virginia for the 6th annual Monarch Butterfly Tag and Release on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. You’ll have the opportunity to tag a Monarch butterfly and release it into the Garden. Approximately 50 butterflies will be tagged per hour. The Monarch migrates in late summer to early fall and travels to Mexico. They can travel up to 100 miles per day with a total journey of nearly 2500 miles. All tagging participants will receive a certification with a unique tracking number for their butterfly. (Now you have an excuse to vacay to Mexico because of course you have to go visit your tagged butterfly!!!) :) The Butterfly House is open daily from 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. through Sunday, September 20. It’s the perfect time to say farewell to our exquisite friends!

Festa Italiana
Italy is coming to Virginia Beach. Well, a little of it is.  Enjoy two days of pasta, pizza, Italian wine, beer, and entertainment, together with family-friendly activities like grape-stomping. Let’s say our favorite word together “F-R-E-E” because that’s exactly what it cost to get a little Italy this weekend. For more information, visit BeachStreetUSA.com or call 757-491-SUNN.

27th Annual 1 Mile Fun Run & First Annual Jog4Joe 5K
Alanton Elementary is hosting its 27th Annual 1 Mile Fun Run and Walk & Inaugural Jog4Joe 5K on Sunday. This years event is particularly special as it coincides with the dedication of a brand new Jog4Joe track in honor of the schools late Assistant Principal Dr. Joe Benson who passed away after battling lung cancer last year. The 5K run begins at 8:30 a.m. The 1 mile fun follows at 9:30 a.m. For more information, contact Julie Maynor at 757-581-9246.

“Play-in” for Climate Action
A sit-in at a lunch counter used to be the way to inspire awareness around social issues. A local chapter of Moms Clean Air Force is hoping to change that a little; they are holding a “play-in.” Children will learn yoga and hula-hoop, read and dance, all while being educated on the importance of clean air and clean energy. You can get in on this action Sunday from 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Mount Trashmore.

Whew! I’m exhausted just thinking about everyday that I could do this weekend.
