Virginia Beach, Va. - The Wounded Warrior Project began its "Soldier Ride" event in Hampton Roads.

The ride is a four day cycling event for wounded service members and veterans.

On Thursday, the riders were fitted for the custom bicycles.

The 13 mile ride started on Friday at First Landing Park in Virginia Beach.

The goal of the project is to help former service members overcome physical, mental, or emotional wounds.

"It's more of a camaraderie ride to meet fellow service members who are going through the same issues, same stories, so at least you have someone who can empathize with you," said participant Army veteran Anthony Maynard.

Organizers say they want the ride to give veterans a stepping stone to a healthy future.

"When you talk to them, they know how it is, like 'I know what you're going through, this is what i did to help myself and this is what you can do,'" Maynard said.

Warriors of all abilities can participate in the race. Cycles are designed to accommodate veterans and whatever injuries they suffered in combat.

All equipment is provided free of charge.

The "Soldier Ride" ends on September 12.
