Newport News, Va. - Governor Terry McAuliffe, along with other transportation officials, held a groundbreaking ceremony for a project that will widen parts of I-64 on September 8.

The project will add one travel lane and one shoulder lane in each direction between exit 255 of Jefferson Avenue and exit 234 of the Route 199 interchange in York County.

"My dream always was from Richmond to Hampton Roads to widen 64. Our dream is coming true," said Governor McAuliffe. "This is a big deal for the Commonwealth."

VDOT says the goal of the construction is to bring relief to heavy traffic of "the most heavily traveled areas on the Peninsula."

The expansion is expected to be completed in December 2017.

Locals tell NewsChannel 3, it's about time the project began.

"It's a move in the right direction. If I were prioritizing my highway budget, this would be a top priority project," Skip Spencer said.
