Virginia’s oldest resident dies at age 112

Norfolk, Va. – Virginia’s oldest resident has reportedly died at age 112.

Lela Burden was the 8th oldest person in the United States and the 35th oldest in the world, according to the Gerontology Research Group, a recognized authority on supercenarians,

Mrs. Burden celebrated her 112th birthday in May with a baseball-themed cookout birthday party on the grounds of Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital where she lived.

Last year, Mrs. Burden celebrated her 111th birthday with a Doumar’s ice cream party. A month later, she received her high school diploma.

Mrs. Burden’s niece tells NewsChannel 3 that her aunt passed away in her sleep on Wednesday, July 23rd.

Funeral services will be held July 30th at Metropolitan Funeral Home.
