It's a nice combo: Manicures and cupcakes!
At the Chesapeake Place, an assisted living facility, the seniors love it when a small group of women from a Chesapeake church shows up to give manicures and they bring cupcakes.
"We're getting our nails done and just being pampered", Virginia Deboe, one of the residents said with a big smile.
Every Wednesday the Jazzy Nail Ladies, as they call themselves, make the trip.
They're from Great Bridge Baptist Church and after they spend a couple hours in the assisted living unit, they go next door to the memory care unit at the Chesapeake Place and help about a dozen ladies there. Lanita Anderson, one of the church members, enjoys coming.
"Because it gives me a chance to give back. My husband is in the Navy and I had not lived near my grandmothers for a long time before they passed away, and so when the opportunity became available, it's like a whole room of grandmothers."
Residents like Millie Gennaro are thankful they come. "I think that's very nice, it's very nice."
It was Selina Creekmore's idea. She works at the Chesapeake Place.
"So the ladies, they come every Wednesday and I just thought it was a wonderful thing they do so I felt we needed to take action."
And after sharing with us how these women were taking action, we presented the Jazzy Nail Ladies with a People Taking Action award, along with a $300 Visa gift card from our community partner Southern Bank.
