Portsmouth, Va. – There was an early morning residential fire on Shelby Street in Portsmouth that left 5 people displaced Sunday morning.

Around 5:30 a.m., crews responded to a large volume fire that quickly spread to the attic of the home. It took 7 companies about 20 minutes to gain control of what Jim Hoffler with the Portsmouth fire department is calling an accidental fire.

The home sustained smoke and structure damage as firefighters pulled ceilings and opened walls to get ahead of the fire.

The American Red Cross is helping the family.
