Chesapeake, Va. – A VDOT/STC employee was hit by a car in Chesapeake early Saturday morning.

State Police say a Safety Service Patrol stopped to help a motorist in southbound I-664 underneath the Portsmouth Blvd Overpass in Chesapeake around 1:38 a.m.

Upon leaving his vehicle, William James Nichols, was hit by a 2007 Dodge Charger driven by 46-year-old Yancy McIntyre.

McIntyre ran off road right and then hit Nichols.

Nichols was taken to the hospital, and is said to be in serious condition.

McIntyre has been charged with reckless driving and defective equipment.

Officials say alcohol was not a factor.
