latest_numbers_LASST510000000000003_2005_2015_all_period_M04_data_unemployment+rateNorfolk, Va. – The unemployment rate in Virginia ticked up from 4.7% to 4.8% between February and March of this year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the preliminary numbers have the rate staying at 4.8% for May.

Although this is not a large increase, it’s the first time the unemployment rate has gone up since June of 2011. If the rate steadies out at 4.8%, it will be well above the pre-recession low of 2.9% set back in May 2007, but still much lower than the peak rate of 7.4% in 2010.

Only time will tell if this increase is just a hiccup, or an omen of worse to come.
