‘The People’s Mayor’ Irvine B. Hill dies at 87

Norfolk, Va. – Residents in the City of Norfolk are mourning the loss of a man best known as “The People’s Mayor.” Irvine B. Hill passed away at the age of 87 on Wednesday according to city officials.

Hill served on the Norfolk City Council  from Sept. 1, 1972 until August 30, 1976.

He served as mayor from 1974 until 1976.

Folks called him “The People’s Mayor” for extending a warm welcome to everyone he encountered.

Mayor Paul Fraim released the following statement after his passing:

“Irvine Hill was a distinguished, much loved former mayor who was also our great ambassador-at-large and cheerleader.  We are grateful for his many years of service and his numerous contributions to the city he loved and cherished.  His deep belief in and commitment to Norfolk was a source of inspiration for all who serve her.  He will be greatly missed.  His family is in our thoughts and prayers.”
