People Taking Action: Woman works to help the homeless and needy kids

Posted

Chesapeake, Va. - Our surprise unfolds inside a Value City Furniture store near Chesapeake Square Mall.

Once inside, Antheus Hebert is leading the way to the back of the store.

As we get closer, he gestures where his wife Nina is working. He nominated her for a non-profit group she started, Elegance In Action.

We told Nina we received an email from her husband about how her group is taking action.

He read portions of it.

"When she's not working, she's spending countless hours volunteering in the community with the ladies of Elegance In Action."

And taking action is what they do from holding a pancake breakfast fundraiser at Applebees to helping the homeless. They also volunteer at local elementary schools and donate book bags to needy kids and the list goes on.

For those reasons, we presented Nina with a NewsChannel 3 People Taking Action award, plus a $300 Visa gift card from our community partner Southern Bank.

The recognition had Nina wiping away tears as she explained why she takes action.

"I do the different things because it actually makes me feel good, not really to be recognized. I just enjoy what I do. I do it from my heart."

Nina stresses it's a group effort and wanted to acknowledge the work of all her members.

She also was truly surprised she was being honored.

"This is way more than I ever expected. I've seen this on television, but I never thought it would come to me."

Nina says she will use the Visa gift card for more of the group's community work.
