Portsmouth, Va. – The death of a prisoner at the Portsmouth City Jail is under investigation by Portsmouth Police detectives.
Portsmouth Police say the prisoner was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant just before 12:10 a.m. Monday morning and taken to police headquarters.
Around 4:30 a.m., the prisoner was turned over to sheriff’s deputies at the Portsmouth City Jail after additional charges were secured against him.
Just after 5:00 a.m., deputies noticed the prisoner having a medical emergency and called police to have medics respond. Deputies began rendering life saving techniques, including CPR, to the prisoner.
After medics arrived, those techniques continued and the prisoner was transported to the hospital where he later died.
The investigation into the death of this prisoner is still ongoing.
