Portsmouth, Va. – The Elizabeth River Tunnels (ERT) Project team, in partnership with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), will continue the closure of Des Moines Avenue between South and Duke streets through April for pile driving near Interstate 264 (I-264) in Portsmouth. This work is related to pier construction for the future Martin Luther King (MLK) Extension.

During this timeframe, residents and motorists in the vicinity of the construction site may hear noise during daytime hours resulting from the pile driving activities.

Signed detours are in place to direct motorists around the closures. Motorists traveling northbound on Des Moines Avenue can take Duke Street to Elm Avenue to South Street. Motorists traveling southbound can take South Street to Elm Avenue to Duke Street to re-access Des Moines Avenue. Due to the nature of construction, closure dates are subject to change.

Completion of the MLK Extension will create an efficient, connected transportation network, providing direct access between the Downtown and Midtown tunnels and High Street and London Boulevard in Portsmouth.

A schedule of construction-related closures and alternate routes can be found on DriveERT.com. Current lane closure information is available on VDOT’s weekly lane closure forecast.
