Amherst, Va. – Sweet Briar College faculty hope to meet with Board of Directors to pass a resolution opposing the shutdown of the private women’s college.

According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, faculty members broke a rule in its bylaws and came together on March 16th to discuss alternatives to the schools closing.

“We the faculty of Sweet Briar College oppose the unilateral decision to close the College,” the resolution said. “We support our alumnae and students. We request an immediate meeting with the Board of Directors to discuss specific alternatives as we move forward.”

On February 28th, the Board of Directors at Sweet Briar College announced that the Class of 2015 will be its last graduating class. Closing of the women’s college is due to a result of insurmountable financial challenges.

The College has about 110 faculty members and 530 students.

The College hopes to provide faculty and staff alternative opportunities in the academic field. Efforts will immediately begin to help current students transfer to other colleges and universities.

The College will also host an on-campus college fair to help match current students with transfer opportunities.

Sweet Briar College will officially close August 25, 2015, in order to allow for the completion of summer credit hours.
