Chesapeake, Va. - A family is devastated after a young mother was killed in a hit and run accident last week. The victim was identified as 29-year-old Jamie Freeman.
At around 5:50 p.m., emergency crews responded to the 4200 block of Portsmouth Blvd for a hit and run last Friday. She was with her husband, William Freeman who tells NewsChannel 3 they were going to the movies for date night.
Witnesses told them that a Mercedes, driven by 72-year-old Audrey Murphy, was going eastbound when it ran into the back of the Ford SUV Freeman was driving causing it to go into oncoming traffic.
A Jeep Cherokee was going in the opposite direction and hit the Ford SUV on the passenger side where Jamie Freeman was sitting. She was taken to the hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
Murphy was charged with a involuntary manslaughter, DUI and hit and run, and is currently being held in the Chesapeake City Jail without bond.
When police arrested her at her home in Portsmouth, she was still sitting in her Mercedes. Police say she had been drinking.
Chesapeake police say additional charges against Murphy are pending.
Jamie Freeman's family says she had a passion for music. She taught herself to play the piano at the age of four and now her five-year-old daughter, who she leaves behind, is following in her footsteps.
