When you think of the faces of the homeless, what is your vision? You may be surprised to learn the average age of the homeless in the Hampton Roads region is nine-years-old.
That is why NewsChannel 3 is taking action with Operation Christmas List. Because children don’t understand the economy or unemployment, they just know it’s Christmas.
Meet Precious. She’s a lively eight-year-old who lives at the Union Mission homeless shelter.
She lives in the shelter with her grandmother.
We asked Precious to write a letter to Santa and we thought an eight-year-old would have a long list of toys and dolls, but Precious actually wished for much more.
“Dear Santa, I wish I could live with my mom. I wish I could see my dad. I wish I had $20,000 so I could help my family. I wish something good could happen to my grandmother; that would make her so happy. I wish my brother could live with us again. I want a 3DS and an Apple iPad mini and a flat screen TV and this is all. Thank you Santa.”
This is a child’s Christmas list – and most of what’s on the list is the stuff that money can’t buy.
Let’s do what we can to make sure no child wakes up Christmas Day without a toy of their own.
