Detroit, MI – An engaged mother of three, 27-year-old Mary Spears, was shot and killed Sunday morning after refusing to give a man her phone number.

Spears was at the American Legion Joe Louis Post No. 375, a bar in eastern Detroit. That’s when family members said a 38-year-old man approached her and asked for her phone number.

According to New York Daily News, a family member, who didn’t want to be named, told a local station Spears rejected him saying, “I have a man, I can’t talk to you.”

However, the man proceeded to harass her by grabbing and hitting her. Her fiancé then got involved and a fight broke out.

During the fight, the suspect allegedly took out a handgun and began shooting at Spears as she tried to run away. He shot her once and then two times in the head, killing her. He then began shooting into the crowd, injuring Spears’ fiancé and four other family members.

The suspect attempted to flee on foot. Police caught him and took him into custody.

Spears’ fiancé and the four other family members that were shot are expected to recover.

Spears left behind three sons, aged 8, 4, and 1.

There is a gofundmepage to cover Spears’ funeral expenses. So far, the page has raised $4,895.
