Man found dead in Newport News vehicle identified

Newport News, Va. - Newport News police are investigating after a man was found dead in a vehicle in the parking lot of an apartment complex early Sunday morning.

Police responded to a call of shots fired around 3:30 a.m. to the 300 block of Boulder Drive in Newport News.

The victim was found shot dead in the driver's seat of a vehicle parked in the parking lot. He has been identified as 31-year-old David Duke Sims.

Sims was previously convicted of 2nd degree murder and robbery in Duval County, Florida. He was released from jail in 2012 and most recently resided in Chesapeake. It is unknown why he was at the apartment complex in Newport News early Sunday morning.

Police say the only suspect information they have is that a man dressed in black clothing was seen running from the area.

The case is being investigated as a homicide.
