Kitty Hawk, N.C. (WTKR) - The Town of Kitty Hawk has received guidance on strengthening its dune line to help protect against storm damage.

The July 11th issue of the Town Manager's Newsletter outlines a presentation made to the Town Council on July 7th by Coastal Planning and Engineering.

According to the newsletter, the study was conducted to provide specific ideas to help combat ocean over wash and flooding.

NewsChannel 3 was in Kitty Hawk in October 2012 when Hurricane Sandy produced significant ocean over wash which forced the closure of the 158 Bypass.

Among the suggestions presented to Kitty Hawk:

  • Haul in sand from elsewhere to build up and form a more continuous dune line
  • Install raised walkovers in at public beach access points where heavy pedestrian traffic lowers sand elevation.
  • Rope off vehicle access points to discourage people from walking in those areas.
  • Raise driveways to follow dune line contour.
  • Move parking areas to allow for the placement of sand or sand fences.
