Virginia Beach, Va.- Around 8:12 am Sunday morning, Virginia Beach Police received reports of a motorcycle on the side of the road in the 3600 block of Indian River Rd.

When officers arrived, they saw the operator in the woods adjacent to the motorcycle.

According to Police, the 2011 Harley Davidson exited the road to the right, hit a ditch and struck a tree which caused the operator to eject into the woods.

The motorcycle operator, 49 year old Richard John Hoben of Virginia Beach, was taken to a local hospital.

We have now learned that the victim has died from injuries.

Alcohol appears to be a factor in this fatal crash.

His son just died recently. He was my cousin. Retired Navy Seal. Tough time for our family right now. Not concerned about spelling.

Very sorry for your loss, my husband and my husband cousin were friends of his. My husbands cousin just seen him a few weeks ago, didn’t know he just lost a son. Thoughts and prayers to your family.

I am so sorry to all friends and family for your loss. I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. Just two weeks ago Rich joined me and many others on a ride for a scholarship benefit in memory of my son who passed away four years ago very much the same way. Again, there just are not words to express how sorry I am for your loss.

I grew up with Rich and have fond memories of skating and sking with him. We had some really radical days together!!!!
He use to joke when he did something wrong and say” it was a accident” I know he is telling God that now in heaven I hope his family and friends are well And I am so sorry for your loss I will miss him rip Rich

Linda et al, my out of town HS girl friend and I met Richard at the Ocean front last month. I too am Navy (nurse corps) retired. Richard was generous, caring and quite a historian of stories old and new. We hung out with him inviting him to my home to visit my husband and friends. He told me of that run he did to Knotts Island run and how special that was. He was a good man who left us way too soon!
