Marine Corps Capt. William Mahoney worried how he would land when the nose landing gear on his AV-8B Harrier malfunctioned after he took off from the Norfolk-based USS Bataan. Fortunately for him the Bataan carries a special padded stool for just such an emergency. Mahoney says he never actually saw the stool during the landing.

It is a good landing if you can walk away from it. But, it is a GREAT landing if they can use the plane again! Fine piloting by this young man and awesome & innovative work by the crewmembers who devised “The Stool”
