Norfolk, Va. - A part of Tidewater Drive that was under construction for months is now back open.

But drivers may still need to take a detour.

Good news for drivers who have had to take the detour to get from Tidewater Drive to E Little Creek Road.

It reopened overnight.

The deadline was pushed back several times since the work started back in February.

Public Works officials say these improvements are necessary to replace an underpass that has outlived its 50-year life span.

They tell NewsChannel3 the work took longer than expected because of the weather and issues while digging up the ground.

But that everchanging deadline was frustrating folks that live and work around the area.

And there could be more issues when phase II begins and the underpass is shut down.

If it needed fixing it needed fixing, I would rather be safe than sorry. People are never happy no matter what you do. I like it because the lights been out and you get through there so much faster.

Someone needs to explain to me how removing that overpass is going to make things better at that intersection. It’s going to be an even bigger nightmare to get through there now.

We tried to head southbound on Tidewater today and were directed up the feeder road, then a mandatory right turn on Little Creek, then left with no direction to get back to Tidewater. I know it has to be fixed, but a little guidance as to how to proceed around the work would be nice.
