This June marks the beginning of what is now designated as “Move Over Awareness Month” in Virginia. The declaration is intended to further support Virginia’s public safety professionals and highway safety workers, including safety service patrols on the roads.

According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, in 2013, nationwide traffic-related fatalities were the leading cause of line of duty, law enforcement deaths.

Virginia State Police partnered with Virginia Department of Transportation to promote the law and State Police are posting weekly on the department’s Facebook page “Move Over.”

Established in 2002, Virginia’s Move Over law requires drivers to either move over a lane, or when unable to, to cautiously pass all emergency personnel stopped on the side of the road.
