UPDATE: Police identify man hit and killed by police car in Portsmouth

Portsmouth, Va. - A 60-year-old man was hit and killed by a Portsmouth police car on Wednesday night on Woodstock Street and Portsmouth Blvd.

The victim has been identified as 60-year-old Sanasga J. Weera of the 50 block of Radford Street in Portsmouth.

Calls came in at around 9:09 p.m. to emergency officials about the accident. Medics responded to provide medical attention but Weera succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Police say the officer was not responding to an emergency at the time. The officer is now on administrative duty pending an investigation.

Police are not sure how the man ended up in the street.

The investigation into the accident is still ongoing.
