Newport News, Va - Mount Gilead Deliverance Tabernacle Church held more than 100 years of service, prayers and worship. Today it is nothing but a pile of charred rubble.
“I looked at the window and it was just a fire ball everything out of every window just fire,” Kari Pope told NewsChannel 3.
The fire started just after 4:30 a.m. Sunday morning. Firefighters say it was massive, the roof collapsed before crews were able to put it out.
Thankfully no one was hurt but the congregation is heartbroken. Newschannel 3 spoke to a deacon at the church, he says Sunday school was supposed to start at 10:30 a.m. this morning but church leaders had to rush to call members and tell them their place of worship is now gone.
“I was married here all of my kids were raised here,” Yvonne Council, a member of the church, said.
Council is heartbroken but says she has faith this church will rise again.
“I have tears. Just heartbroken that the church has gone down just heartbroken but hopefully they will rebuild it's a good ministry good service l cars,” Council added.
Firefighters say at this point they are still trying to find out what caused the fire, it was a total loss.
Church leaders are also still trying to figure out how they will move forward.
