Newport News school bus evacuated due to reports of smoke

Newport News, Va. – Police dispatch reports a Newport News school bus was evacuated due to reports of smoke at 55th Street and Huntington Avenue.

The bus driver either saw or smelled smoke and called dispatch, who then called the fire department, according to a school spokesperson.

The vehicle was not on fire.

There were four students on board, heading to Dutrow Elementary School, according to an official. The bus number is 299.

Another bus came to pick up those students following the evacuation.

Officials are still trying to determine the source of the smoke.
