If you’re planning to celebrate St. Patrick’s day with a few alcoholic beverages, be sure to have a designated driver.

Officers are already getting ready to be on the lookout for those who get behind the wheel while impaired.

Newport News police say they will start their patrols on Friday, March 14th and they will continue their efforts on Saturday.

Their DUI operations will last from 9 p.m. until 3 a.m. every night.

Virginia Beach says they will also step up patrols this weekend.  If you’re in the resort city, you may see message boards reminding you to celebrate responsibly.

If your car is parked in one of the Municipal Parking lots at the Oceanfront at 2nd, 4th, 19th and 25th Streets or Rudee Loop and you realize you’ve had too much to drink, please make sure to call an officer at 757-385-5000 to avoid having your car towed.

Last year, officers say they arrested 2,379 people for driving under the influence. They say there were 23 crashes during this year and seven of those involved alcohol or drugs.
