Newport News, Va. – On Friday, March 7, 2014 at about 8:30 p.m. police communications received several calls of an auto pedestrian crash in the area of 74th Street and Jefferson Avenue.

The driver of the vehicle which struck the homeless pedestrian left the injured man on the scene.

That driver has been identified as 56-year-old Darrell Keith Nelson of Hampton.

Video surveillance shows a white pickup truck traveling westbound on 74th Street striking the homeless 46-year-old man walking northbound on Jefferson Avenue. As the man and the vehicle enter the intersection of 74th Street and Jefferson Avenue, he is struck by the vehicle and was dragged a short distance as the vehicle turns right onto Jefferson Avenue.

The pedestrian was hospitalized with possible life threatening injuries.

Witnesses described the vehicle as a white Ford pickup occupied by two white males, both with shoulder length hair. Both men were middle aged or older with the driver having white hair, the passenger with blonde hair, police say.

Nelson was arrested on April 15th. He has been charged with felony hit and run and reckless driving in connection to this crash.
