After another round of winter weather in early March forced schools to shut down for several days, many are yet again wondering when the days will be made up.

Here’s what we found out from a few local districts so far:

** We’re adding new information to this list as we receive it so make sure to check back! **

Virginia Beach:

Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) will add 20 minutes to the end of the instructional day to recoup time lost due to the March snow closures. The adjusted schedule will be in effect from Monday, March 31 to Thursday, May 8. This schedule, recommended by many parents and staff, will provide teachers and students time to prepare for the SOL testing.

In addition, the SOL testing window for all schools has been pushed back to begin May 19.

Please note the additional 20 minutes will not be added to the already scheduled Saturday, April 26, makeup day.

Chesapeake:

All board members voted to add 6 minutes to the end of the school day starting March 17th through the end of the school year on June 11th.

Norfolk:

Norfolk Public Schools will use a combination of “banked” instructional hours – additional hours built into the regular school calendar beyond the state-required 990 hours – and an extension of two early release days to make up for instructional hours lost March 3 & 4 due to snow accumulation. June 12 & 13, which were previously scheduled as early release days, will become full instructional days. Exams for secondary students will still take place on those dates during the full instructional days.

Portsmouth:

On March 20th, School board will vote to make April 3rd, April 4th, and June 12th full days for high school students to fulfill instructional requirements.

All other students will not have any snow makeup days… Portsmouth already met their 990 hour minimum instruction rule because they have longer school days with extra time built in.

Suffolk:

The Superintendent will be presenting a Make-Up Day proposal to the Suffolk School Board at its March 13th meeting. The proposal will NOT include Saturdays but will recommend changing the early dismissal days at the end of the year (June 11,12 and 13) to full days.

Newport News:

Due to the weather related school closings, Friday, March 7,  and Friday, April 18, will be full-days for all students and staff. Both days were originally scheduled as half-days for students.

Hampton:

Previously, Hampton City Schools announced make up days on April 21, June 12 and June 13. Because of the most recent inclement weather, HCS will also be in session for a full day on Friday, May 23.

Williamsburg – James City County:

WJCC will be open for a full day of school on April 21, 2014, to make up for school closures on March 3 and March 4.

Virginia Code allows school divisions to make up one day for each two days missed of school if the division has already missed five school days. The March closures were days six and seven for WJCC.

However, if we have any more school closings due to inclement weather, April 11 –the last day of Spring Break – will be used as a make-up day. If we have either a delayed start or early dismissal due to inclement weather, April 4 will be changed from early release to a full day of school.

Isle of Wight County:

The Inclement Weather Make-Up Plan as of March 4, 2014 includes the following changes:

April 4th now becomes a full-day and an exam day

June 12 becomes a full-day (previously an early dismissal day)

June 13 becomes a full-day (previously an early dismissal day)

Please note that future adjustments may be necessary pending any future inclement weather that causes school closings or delays.
