(CNN) — In another quintessential “Biden” moment, Vice President Joe Biden joked about his basketball skills in Washington on Tuesday.

Known at times for his off-the-cuff remarks, Biden said at an event honoring African-American history month that he and former NBA star Kevin Johnson, now Sacramento’s mayor, could take on the President in a game of hoops.

“I told the President, next game I have him,” Biden said. “Just remember I may be a white boy, but I can jump.”

On a more serious note, Biden’s remarks focused on voting rights, pointing to states like North Carolina, Alabama and Texas which have passed controversial voter ID laws. Biden linked the fight over voting rights playing out in states now to the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

“These guys never go away. Hatred never, never goes away,” Biden said. “The zealotry of those who wish to limit the franchise cannot be smothered by reason.”

“Without the right to vote, nothing else much mattered,” he said.
