Newport News Police officer suffers medical emergency, crashes patrol vehicle

Newport News Police say an on-duty uniformed officer suffered a medical emergency and crashed her marked patrol unit on Thursday afternoon.

Police say the officer was driving through the parking lot of the McDonalds at 417 Denbigh Boulevard when she struck the left front bumper of a 2007 Ford Mustang traveling eastbound in the parking lot.

The driver of the Mustang was 34 year old Newport News man who was not injured.

The vehicle continued onto Denbigh Boulevard where it struck the driver’s side door of a 1998 Chrysler minivan.

The minivan was driven by a 29 year old Newport News woman, her infant daughter who was secured in a child seat was not injured. The driver was reportedly shaken and transported by Medics for observation.

The police vehicle continued across all lanes to the south side of Denbigh Blvd., jumped the curb and struck a pole coming to rest in front of Cash Converters at 14346 Warwick Blvd.

The officer was in and out of consciousness and taken by Medics to the hospital.

Police say they believe an undetermined medical event may have contributed to the crash.
