Virginia Beach, Va. (WTKR) - Improvements have been made to an Aragona Village intersection following an October crash where a student was hit by a truck.

The 12-year-old Independence Middle School student was struck while walking to her bus stop.

Following that, traffic engineers with the Public Works Department met with parents, school officials, the bus driver, a police officer and Parks and Recreation officials to consider possible traffic and pedestrian safety improvements.

Following those meetings, Public Works crews made several improvements.

Public Works officials tell NewsChannel 3 that included trimming overgrown vegetation at the intersection of Aragona Boulevard and Kellam Road.

They also installed STOP bars and STOP pavement markings as well as double yellow center-lines on Kellam Road at Aragona Blvd.

New pedestrian crossing warning signs were also put up in both directions on Aragona Boulevard ahead of the Kellam Road intersection.

Spokesman Drew Lankford says the Public Works Department also supports installing sidewalks in the Argaona Village community, but that would require a petition with signatures of 75% of affected residents.
