Chesapeake, Va. – NewsChannel 3 wanted to know why there were still icy sidewalks at a Chesapeake senior living center three days after the snow started falling.

Viewer Ricardo Smith sent NewsChannel 3 pictures of the conditions at Chesapeake Crossing. Ricardo was concerned about his 83-year-old mother’s safety as well as the safety of more than 100 senior residents at the apartment complex.

Our news crew spotted an 88-year-old woman digging her walker into the ice just to get from her car to her mailbox. Others held on to loved ones as they walked.

“But I’ve never had to come through it like this,” said Juanita Hicks.

Ricardo’s mother Mildred was too scared to leave her apartment.

“I’m on a cane and I’m afraid of falling,” said Mildred.

NewChannel 3 found out the property maintenance is actually managed by the Chesapeake Redevelopment and Housing Authority. After our crew stopped by there Friday, we were promised the walkways and sidewalks would be cleared by the end of the day.

We checked on that promise and when our crew went back to Chesapeake Crossing, men were out with shovels, salt, and a truck and come to plow the parking lot.

“Thank you channel 3 for being so responsive; it has really did us a favor,” said Mildred.
