UPDATE: Fire officials say the 83-year-old woman rescued from the fire died from her injuries early on Saturday.

Norfolk, Va. – A Norfolk woman was rescued after flames ripped through a two-story home in the 8500 block of Devon Street on Friday afternoon.

Fire crews were notified about the fire at around 1:40 p.m.

Witnesses say they saw smoke coming from the home. When fire crews arrived within minutes, they reported heavy black smoke coming from the windows on both floors of the home.

A witness told them that someone was still inside of the home. Crews then forced their way in through the back door and found the woman on the first floor.

They were able to get her out of the home and medics started to treat the woman. They say she was conscious at the time.

She was then taken to the hospital. She suffered some burns and smoke inhalation.

The home sustained fire damage on both floors. It is now uninhabitable.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Officials say the home did not have working smoke alarms at the time.
