While many people can remember every detail of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, ninth graders at Green Run Collegiate High School in Virginia Beach were merely toddlers.

That's why social studies teacher Andrew Jackson taught a special lesson on today's anniversary, showing news clips and documentary footage about the attacks.

"Most of these kids don't have a direct memory of the event," said Jackson.  "So showing them some of the images and live reaction helps to move them back to that time and give a context."

American Visions, a U.S. history book in Virginia Beach schools, has two pages describing the events.  However, teachers like Jackson felt it was important to show the images and have discussions to better drive home the point.

"So then it's an emotional connection and not just an academic one," he said.

"In a way it kind of strikes fear into my heart," said Isaiah Thomas, a 14-year-old ninth grader.  "It does make you very solemn and it does make you wonder what would you do in a situation like that."
