July 2013 can be summed up as “typical July”. Mid-Summer in Hampton Roads and Eastern North Carolina… it’s hot and humid with scattered showers and storms. This July seemed to be more of the same but how did the numbers stack up?

Norfolk

Hottest: 94° / Coolest: 66° / 14 days with 90°+

Rainfall: 8.19″ / +3.05″ vs average / 9 days with measurable rainfall

YTD: 28.23″ / +1.81″ vs YTD average

Wallops Island

Hottest: 94° / Coolest: 64° / 11 days with 90°+

Rainfall: 5.74″ / +1.65″ vs average / 15 days with measurable rainfall

YTD: 27.62″ / +4.42″ vs YTD average

Elizabeth City

Hottest: 94° / Coolest: 65° / 7 days with 90°+

Rainfall: 6.48″ / +0.82″ vs average / 14 days with measurable rainfall

YTD: 23.77″ / -3.55″ vs YTD average

Hatteras

Hottest: 90° / Coolest: 72° / 3 days with 90°+

Rainfall: 1.88″ / -3.11″ vs average / 9 days with measurable rainfall

YTD: 27.43″ / -2.83″ vs YTD average

In many ways, the numbers matched the July expectations. We had the heat, but no triple digits. We have the showers/storms, but it was a case of the haves and have nots. Generally speaking, eastern Virginia had a soggy month and has a rain surplus for the year. Eastern North Carolina was on the average to dry side this month and has a rain deficit for the year.
