Tropical Storm Barry forms

Tropical Storm Barry has formed in the southern Gulf of Mexico according to data from the Hurricane Hunters. Wednesday afternoon, Hurricane Hunter aircraft measured winds of 40mph, making it a tropical storm.!Facebook

By definition, the sustained winds in a tropical storm have to be 39mph or higher for it to be named. Once the winds reach 74mph, the storm reaches hurricane strength.

The storm is expected to stay far away from Hampton Roads, tracking west towards the Mexico coastline. Tropical Storm Warnings were issued Thursday afternoon for the coast of Veracruz. The storm is expected to bring heavy rain amounts of 3-5 inches with maximum amounts of 10 inches possible. Flash Flooding and mud slides will be possible in mountainous areas.
