Virginia Beach, Va. - Police say John William Hutchison, 84, of the 2000 block of Salem Road in Virginia Beach was killed Saturday evening after Jason Seth Sergent, 40, crashed into him while driving under the influence.

The accident happened around 5:00 p.m. on Princess Anne Road near General Booth Blvd.

According to police, Sergent was driving a 2003 Toyota pickup truck southbound on Princess Anne Road and had his son in the truck with him at the time. He left the roadway to the right, over-corrected and crossed into on-coming northbound traffic, then crashed into the 2000 Ford Taurus that Hutchison was driving. The impact caused Hutchison's Taurus to spin and it came to a rest at the intersection of Princess Anne Road and Three Oaks Drive.

Seconds after the crash, Sergent's truck was hit by a 2000 Volkswagen Beetle.

Hutchison was transported to the hospital where he later died.

Hutchison's wife was in the car with him when they crashed. Sheryl Painter told Newschannel 3 she comforted her until emergency crews arrived.

"It was heartbreaking, especially having dealt with his wife, that is what broke my heart the most, she told me over and over again, he can’t die, he has to take care of me, and I will never forget her eyes looking at me trying to tell her he would be okay," said Painter.

Sergent and his son were not injured.

Sergent, has been charged with DUI - Child Present, Involuntary Manslaughter and Maiming. He is being held without bond in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center.
