Greer (Greg Funderburg) — A cow spent several hours roaming a South Carolina apartment complex after escaping from a nearby meat packing plant.

It took police a little more than three hours to try to catch and tranquilize the cow.

“I looked out my window and saw this huge black bull, that was just standing by the mailboxes,” said resident Kristi Corder.

The owner of Vaughn Packing Company said the cow jumped over a gate and got out.

“I think it was a little bit nervous,” said owner John Waldrop.

Waldrop said he has never seen anything like this in 62 years of business.

Police said the tranquilizers didn’t work, so they had to kill it. Several people said they still can’t believe it really happened.

Greer police said they had half a dozen officers out trying to catch the cow and thankfully no one got hurt. The cow never ran into traffic, where it could have caused an accident on the road.

While some were upset to see the cow’s escape end in its death, the packaging facility said they will not use the cow and will dispose of its remains properly.
