UPDATE: Suspected bank robber who lead police on two-city chase identified

UPDATE: 47 year-old Phillip Basket of Chesapeake has been charged with one count each of robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, felony elude, violation of a protective order, and wearing a mask in public. He is currently in the custody of the Portsmouth Sheriff's Office. At the request of detectives his booking photograph will not be released at this time.

Portsmouth, Va. – Police have arrested a man who allegedly robbed a Portsmouth bank Thursday afternoon.

Crews responded to a robbery at the Wells Fargo Bank located at 5820 High Street at 1:28 p.m.

A black male wearing a mask entered the bank armed with a gun and demanded money. He was given an undisclosed amount of cash and then left the bank in a van.

A police officer responding to the scene saw the van at the intersection of High Street and Hartford Street.

As the officer tried to stop the van, a pursuit began. The chase ended in the 100 block of Ballard Court in Virginia Beach and the man was taken into custody after trying to run from officers.

The suspect was taken to Maryview hospital after he told police he injured his arm. Police say they were able to get items that linked him to the robbery.

He is still in the hospital being treated.
