We’re dusting off the Skeeter Meter in the VIPIR Forecast center, as the little blood suckers are starting to become more active.
Because of the cool weather, mosquito activity has been fairly low this spring. But it looks like that’s going to change, at least for a day or two.
Mosquitoes like the kind of weather that most of us dread. When it gets hot and muggy with light wind mosquitoes come out looking to dine. We’re expecting high mosquito activity both Thursday and Friday evening before a cold front sends the critters back into hiding for a few days.
A few more mosquito facts:
* Mosquitoes are most active when the temperature rises above 80 degrees and they tend to hibernate when the mercury drops into the 50s.
* Female mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water. So getting rid of those little puddles on your trash cans and under flower pots can help rid your yard of the pests.
* Mosquitoes are always looking for a blood meal, but some varieties are most active around dusk.
* Bug zappers do very little to protect you from mosquitoes. Less than one percent of the insects killed by zappers are mosquitoes.
