Virginia Beach, Va. – Red Mill Elementary students have been working on finding ways to help take care of our planet Earth.

In honor of Earth Day, every student and teacher took home a Virginia Pine Seedling to plant on their own.

How will these tiny seedlings (about the size of a ruler) help our environment? These seedlings are hardy plants native to Virginia, which can grow to be as tall as a five story building. Song birds and squirrels will make their homes in these trees while the trees help remove carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, from the atmosphere, experts say. Planting trees protects the soil, shades homes, and creates windbreaks, keeps streams and rivers clean, while also helping to fight global warming.

VBCPS officials would like to extend a special thank you to the Helping Hands Club, Mrs. Hart (school nurse) and Dr. Scarcelli (principal) for making the tree giveaway possible.
