North Carolina officials have announced that state and local law enforcement officers will be out in full force over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend “Booze It & Lose It” campaign.

Motorists can expect statewide checkpoints and stepped-up patrols today through Sunday, March 17, in an effort to remove impaired drivers from the roads.

NCDOT Deputy Secretary of Intergovernmental Affairs and Budget Coordination La Nica Allison, GHSP Director Becky Wallace, Director of Forensic Tests for Alcohol Paul Glover and Brunswick County Sheriff John Ingram spoke at a kickoff event in Wilmington today.

Officials also unveiled the new BATMobile (breath-alcohol testing unit) which is 40-foot long with two magistrate stations, a full office and surveillance cameras on the back. It also includes six stations where law enforcement officers can perform breath concentration tests.

During the St. Patrick’s Day campaign last year, there were 160 alcohol-related crashes that resulted in 3 fatalities and 141 injuries.
