Police find car involved in Norfolk shooting

He is currently at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in stable condition recovering from his injuries.

On Wednesday, Norfolk Police Spokesman Chris Amos confirmed that Mitchell was a passenger in a car stopped by a uniformed officer in an unmarked car.

Amos said the officer was on special detail and initiated the stop after observing suspicious activity by the car on two different occasions Tuesday morning.

"He had seen them in one neighborhood. They were going through the neighborhood – going up and down streets as if they were searching for something. They parked and he went about his business," Amos said. "Then he saw the car again in a neighboring neighborhood and doing the same thing – up and down streets."

As the officer approached the car that had pulled into the 7-11 parking lot on Hampton Boulevard near Beechwood Avenue, Mitchell got out and started running.

The officer chased Mitchell around the building and when they got back to the front, Mitchell jumped into the officer's car.

The officer reached into trying to grab Mitchell and that's when police say Mitchell took off.

"At that point he’s pulling away – he puts the car in drive and goes across the parking lot dragging the officer," Amos said.

Amos says that's when the officer managed to retrieve his gun and fire several shots that hit Mitchell.

While the officer was involved with Mitchell, police say two other people in the car that had been stopped took off.

Police recovered the car, a gold Dodge Avenger- several blocks away on Greenbrier Avenue.

Through their investigation, Norfolk Police have found one of the two men they say was in the car when it left the 7-11.

"We have located one of the other two and he has been cooperating with us – at this point there are no charges being taken out against him," Amos stated.

The officer who was involved only suffered minor injuries including some shoulder pain as a result of being dragged by the car.

He will be placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation, which is standard procedure for officers involved in shootings.
