Christmas may be in the past but the holiday shopping season is very much still in the present.

"The sales are great. There's lots of stuff that's on sale that wasn't before Christmas," said Donna Pendergrass, of Norfolk.

The wet weather didn't stop hundreds of shoppers from filling the MacArthur Center in downtown Norfolk the day after Christmas.

"I'm taking advantage of the sales that are 50-75% off. It's awesome. I actually always wait till after Christmas to find the sales," Venola McKellar of Norfolk said on Wednesday.

Some took advantage of the sales, while others had to make some returns or exchanges.

"It's been fairly easy, we were in and out. We took three things back so far, and it took a total of five minutes, it's been really good," said Thomas Mallory, also of Norfolk.

Most of the shoppers we spoke to were pleased with the different return policies. Still, store managers encourage folks to return or exchange items sooner rather than later.

According to a MasterCard report, holiday sales were not very merry this year. Holiday sales only increased by 0.7%, the lowest level since 2008. Shoppers can expect deeper discounts as retailers scramble to sell what's still sitting on shelves.

"Lots of stores, like Cotton-On, everything is only $10. Some stores are also offering buy-one, get-one free deals," said Katy Valentine, of Chesapeake.
