There's too much sand in the Rudee Inlet, which could cause major problems for boaters.

The city of Virginia Beach has posted a notice urging folks to use extreme caution when approaching the inlet due to serious shoaling conditions.

The city used its own small dredge to pump sand out of the inner portion of the inlet. That work was completed on Monday.

However, the city is waiting on the arrival of the dredge Currituck to pump sand out of the outer basin area of the inlet as early as this weekend.

Shoaling can cause boats to hit bottom and suffer damage.

The dredge Currituck is expected to be in Virginia Beach as early as December 8
